Too many options? Here's How to Choose the Best Facial Mask for Your Skin

Deep cleansing clay mask? Hydrating cream mask? Or how about a cooling gel mask?

With so many different options of face masks on the market, it can be a bit overwhelming when it comes to making a choice. After all, while face masks are there to improve your skin, if you use the wrong type you may end up causing more harm than good. Oops!

To understand which face masks works for you, you’ll need to match one up with your skin type.

Not sure exactly where to start? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Whether your skin is oily, dry, or acne-prone, let us guide you to choose the right product for you.

Clay Masks for Oily and Acne-Prone Skin

Are you constantly having to buff your cheeks with loose powder to remove shine? Or perhaps your skin loves nothing more than wreaking havoc with a sudden breakout?

For oily and acne-prone skin, a clay mask works wonders. They provide your skin with a super-deep cleanse, allowing the clay to soak up unwanted grime and grease without stripping the skin. Likewise, those nasty impurities and toxic agents that clog up pores are pulled right out of the skin, leaving you with a clear, matte, and healthy look.

As clay masks are drying for some people, it’s best to limit use to once a week when you require a skin detox. And if you usually experience dry or dehydrated skin, use clay masks with caution as they could worsen the issue.

To combat oily skin without drying it out, we adore Tuel's Balance Superfood Mask. Pop on for 10 minutes and let the nutrients of the clay work their magic.

Hydrating Masks for Dry Skin

Perhaps, instead, your poor skin always seems to be shedding pesky flakes? It’s not a good look, especially when you try to apply a full face of makeup for a special occasion and your foundation won’t sit properly!

What you need to feed dry and dehydrated skin is a hydrating mask. Typically hydrating masks come in the form of a cream or gel consistency and are designed to replenish and soothe thirsty skin.

Hydrating masks are often packed full of rich oils and moisturizers to help plump parched skin, plus they usually carry lots of anti-aging properties. It’s a win-win!

Another fabulous mask by Tuel is the Moisture Plus Nourishing Mask that works to energize, boost, and hydrate the skin.

However, while hydrating masks work well to boost moisturize in the skin, it’s important to understand that they can’t replace twice-daily moisturizing!

Gel Masks for Red and Irritated Skin

It happens to the best of us – for some reason, our skin has reacted badly to something and has become irritated, red, and sore.

When choosing a mask to reduce redness and soothe angry skin, your best bet is to select a cooling gel mask. The chilled consistency works well to tame hot, red, and irritated skin, plus it will feel incredible!

Gel masks also work well to hydrate oily skin, as they use fewer oils, so skin won’t feel overwhelmed with moisture.

Sit back, pop some cool cucumber slices over your eyes, and let the gel formula reduce that redness. For an extra cooling effect, keep your gel face mask of choice in the fridge. We love Peter Thomas Roth's Cucumber Gel Mask, specially designed to refresh and invigorate the skin.

Exfoliating Masks for Dull Skin

Sometimes you have a peek in the mirror, and your skin just looks and feels a bit… ‘meh’. If your skin is looking more dull than dreamy, an exfoliating mask will work to remedy that.

Polish away dull and dreary surface cells and unwanted pore-clogging impurities with an exfoliating mask that will leave you with a fresh and dewy glow.

Not a fan of harsh grains? Keep an eye out for exfoliating masks that use fruit acids and enzymes, which can feel kinder to the skin.

For example, Revision’s Pumpkin Enzyme Mask is a “scrub-in mask” that features the dual action of physical and enzyme exfoliators to instantly revitalize the complexion, leaving skin feeling smooth and looking healthy.

Firming Masks for Tired and Aging Skin

If you have mature skin, a firming mask is for you. Reverse the signs of aging by choosing a firming face mask that works to tighten and lift the appearance of skin.

Our firming mask of choice is the Tuel Lift Up Firming Mask. This anti-aging treatment mask is packed full of antioxidants, vitamin E, glucosamine, and Siberian ginseng to help you banish those wrinkles and regain a twinkling youthful glow.

Whatever your skin type, there will be a mask out there to help improve your skin. And now you know exactly what to look out for!
