How to Make Your Makeup Last Longer

You probably know us at Skin Elite as your friendly skin care experts or the place where you get all your quality skin care products. But did you know we carry top notch makeup products too? We know your best beauty comes from a combination of skin health and skillful makeup, and we’re here to make it all easier.

On that note, let’s talk about one of the most frustrating parts of makeup: spending time getting it just right but then needing to touch it up several times throughout the day. Or worse, not touching it up and looking in the mirror six hours later to see that your makeup is a mess. No one wants to worry about whether their makeup is looking worse for wear, so check out these tips to help your makeup really last.

Cleanse and Moisturize Your Skin First

Every makeup artist will tell you that prepping your skin is one of the most important parts of the process, and they’re right. Regardless of what time of day it is, you want to start with a clean slate so wash your face with cleanser to get rid of excess oils, dead skin cells, and other debris that could stop your makeup from laying and adhering as well as it can.

After you cleanse, pull out your trusty moisturizer. When your skin is dry, it’ll try pulling moisturizer out of everything it can, which includes your makeup. That can cause your makeup to look faded or overly dry and give it a texture you don’t love.

We recommend using a lightweight moisturizer that doesn’t leave a greasy residue on your skin. After you apply it, give it a few minutes to skin in before you start applying your makeup.

Don’t Skip the Primer

Primer is another highly underrated part of a great makeup look. It makes your skin more even to give you a smooth surface for your makeup. What primer also does, though, is create a barrier between your skin and your makeup so that your skin’s oils or dryness won’t smudge or blur your makeup. In those ways, primer actually helps your makeup look better immediately and helps it last longer.

Use a Setting Powder on Cream Based Products

If you’re like most of us, you probably use a combination of powdered and cream-based makeup products. But sometimes, cream-based products might be too shiny or have an oily look. They also may have a hard time staying in place for a long time.

To help your cream-based products behave, apply a setting powder on top of them. This is a non-pigmented powder that just absorbs into creams and helps them stay in place.

You can also use a technique called baking. You just apply a considerable amount of the setting powder on top of your cream products, give it a few minutes to absorb the oil, and then brush off any excess powder.

Be Prepared to Blot

We’re getting into the summer soon, and that probably means that there will be many days when you want to look stunning all day long, but you’ve got sweat trying to work against you. Sweat causes a bit of a catch-22: if you don’t touch it and allow your face to sweat, it can run or blur your makeup. If you wipe away your sweat, the wiping can smudge your makeup. So what’s a looker to do?

Be prepared and bring some clean tissues, blotting papers, or even napkins with you. When you think you’re sweating, use them to blot or dab the sweat – don’t wipe it. This will keep your makeup looking as intended for as long as possible.

Do a Quick Lip Scrub

Sometimes you don’t even realize your lips have a rough texture…until you put on lipstick and it makes all those dry bits and irregularities stick out like a sore thumb. It’s worth your time to take a few seconds and use a gentle lip scrub before you apply your makeup.

A lip scrub will take care of those textural changes and give your lips a smoother look and feel. Not only does this make your lip makeup look better but it helps it last longer because the lip color can adhere better to your lips.

Finish with a Great Setting Spray

Once you’ve experienced the magic of setting spray, you’ll never be without it again. You could think of setting spray as hairspray but for your makeup. It just holds everything in place and helps your makeup last for hours.
