How to Detox Your Skin After the Festive Period

After scoffing plenty of sugary chocolates, chowing down on cheese, and glugging down the red wine, many of us face blotchy, spotty, or downright dull skin after the festive period.

If like many others, you celebrated the festive spirit for the whole month of December, you may notice that your skin feels way off track.

As well as the cheese, chocolates, and rich foods we tend to guzzle down during Christmas, there’s also the Netflix binge-fests on the sofa and the late nights boozing. While it’s all fun and games at the time, we do tend to abuse our bodies during the Christmas and New Year periods.

It makes sense that come January, many of us will experience increased redness, breakouts, puffiness, dark eye circles, and flare-ups of skin conditions like eczema, rosacea, and psoriasis.

If you can relate, it’s time for a skin detox. We’re here to help – keep reading for our top tips on restoring your complexion for healthy and happy skin.

Change your diet

It comes as no surprise that the typical December diet isn’t a sustainable one. That’s why many people try ‘Dry January’ or ‘Veganary’ straight after the festive season.

The best way to get your skin back on track is by feeding it the right nutrients. But know that there isn’t a timeframe on how quickly your skin will improve after changing your diet. It all depends on how much you indulged during the festivities and your general health.

Fortunately, some of the foods you should swap your Christmas cake and chocolates for are pretty delicious. Think sweet potatoes, nuts, seeds, eggs, broccoli, and cauliflower. These foods are excellent sources of vitamins A, C, and E, all of which help fix unruly skin.

They’re essential vitamins for skin health and include anti-inflammatory antioxidants that encourage the turnover of healthy skin cells and collagen production. Both help keep the skin firm, plump, and looking youthful.

Be sure to up your water intake and consume healthy oils, too. They’re called essential fatty oils for a reason, as they’re required for every cell membrane in the body, playing a vital role in skin health.

Try increasing your intake of omega 3s as many of us are generally more likely to be lacking in these. Plus, they’re highly anti-inflammatory, helping to reduce breakouts and inflammation.

Find omega 3s in their highest amounts in oily fish like sardines, salmon, mackerel, and chia and flax seeds.

Treat your skin with the right products

While adjusting your diet is the most crucial way to improve post-Christmas skin, choosing the right products to treat your skin can help speed up the process.

It’s essential to make sure you’re taking care of your skin properly during your detox, so be sure to opt for clinical skincare products that will nourish and repair your skin.

Reduce breakouts with salicylic acid

Boost your recovery with some skin-loving ingredients that you can incorporate into your daily skincare routine, like glycolic or salicylic acid. These ingredients help to gently exfoliate your skin and unclog pores while treating inflammation.

The Revision Purifying Cleansing Gel is an excellent option. The refreshing formula leaves your skin clean and vibrant while reducing the size of your pores.

The highly concentrated solution contains lactic and salicylic acids, which clean deep into your pores and remove excess oils and impurities.

Not only that, but the gel smells heavenly, too. Scented with a dreamy blend of citrus and sage, the formula provides you with a cleaner and matte complexion with regular use.

Brighten the skin with vitamin C

Vitamin C is a trending skincare ingredient for a good reason. It works incredibly well for anti-ageing while also protecting the skin from oxidative stress and free radical damage that usually increases over the Christmas season.

Not only does the super-ingredient protect your skin, but it also smooths and brightens your complexion.

Reach for Murad’s Vita C Glycolic Brightening Serum to transform dull and lacklustre skin. The serum is known to treat skin conditions, including hyperpigmentation, dullness, and uneven tone.

The serum also contains glycolic acid to quickly resurface and remove dead, dulling surface cells to uncover more radiant skin. It also clears the way for vitamin C to penetrate the skin more effectively.

The product is formulated without fragrance and artificial colors and is ideal for all skin types and tones.
