Good Hair Days in Heat and Humidity? Your Summer Hair Care Tips
Posted by Nikki Wisher on Jun 30th 2025
As much as you might enjoy soaking up some sun and enjoying a pool in the summer, or taking advantage of those late sunsets, your hair isn’t as much of a fan of the summer. The relentless heat is tough on your hair, and if you’re in a humid area, that humidity doesn’t help either. But that doesn’t mean you have to spend all season with frizzy or unmanageable hair. Use these summer hair care tips to help your hair look and feel its best this year.
Rinse Your Hair Before and After the Pool
Who doesn’t love a dip in the pool on a hot day? As refreshing as it can feel for your body, pool water isn’t so refreshing for your hair because of all the cleaning chemicals in it. The safest option, of course, is to avoid getting your hair wet if you’re going in the pool. But if you’re planning on having a serious swim, there are ways to keep your hair protected.
Before you hop in the pool, take a moment to rinse your hair with clean water, like just taking a quick spin in your shower. This way, your hair will soak up that clean water so that it won’t be able to absorb as much of the chlorine water.
After you get out of the pool, give your hair a good shampoo as well. This will help to get rid of the chemicals that your hair tool in from the pool.
Use a Leave-In Conditioner with UV Protection
You already know that sunscreen is essential in the summer sunshine, but did you know that the sun’s radiation can damage your hair too? You can help to protect it without saying no to fun in the sun if you use a leave-in conditioner that has UV protection. This shields your hair from the drying effects of the sun while also keeping it nourished and hydrated.
Switch to a Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner
Sometimes when the seasons change, you have to switch up your routine, and that might include swapping out your shampoo and conditioner for the summer. While you might have found a shampoo and conditioner that worked perfectly for your hair in the cooler months, it might be overly drying in the heat of summer. If you’re struggling with dry or frizzy hair, try to change to a hydrating shampoo and conditioner for the next few months.
Start Using Hydrating Masks
Another way to combat dry, frizzy hair in the summer is by treating yourself to a hydrating hair mask once a week. This just goes beyond your day-to-day routine and gives your hair an extra dose of hydration so it’s smoother and more resilient throughout the summer.
Try a Hair Oil
It’s infinitely frustrating when you’ve figured out the perfect way to style your hair but then summer hits and that same styling process makes your hair frizzy. That’s where a hair oil can come in handy. A little bit goes a long way. After styling your hair, just put some hair oil on your hands and comb your hands through your hair to spread out the oils. This can give you some easy frizz control without losing the shape and look you’ve styled.
Keep Heat Styling to a Minimum
As much as you might love a great blow-out or curl, your hair is already feeling the heat of the summer air, so it’s best to avoid heat styling as much as possible in the summer. You don’t have to stop it entirely, but anything you can do to minimize it will help. For example, after washing your hair, let it air dry most of the way and only use a blow dryer to give it the finishing touches. And while this is necessary all year round, it’s especially important in the summer: use a heat protectant every time you use heat on your hair.
Keep Your Hair Looking Refreshed All Summer Long
You might be sweltering in the summer heat, but your hair doesn’t have to give it away. With the summer hair care tips above, you can look fresh and fabulous all season long, simply by making a few updates to your hair care routine.
