Five Ways to Banish Acne Scars

If you’ve fought a persistent bout of acne and have finally come out triumphant, it may feel like the battle has been won. However, like a cruel trick, acne often can gift you with another problem. Scars.

Even when acne has been dealt with, they can leave unwanted blemishes lingering on your skin long after the breakout has finished. Raised scars, indents, and patches of pigmentation can remain for months or even years on the skin. For some, it seems like acne never really goes away.

If you’re experiencing persistent acne scars that won’t seem to budge, don’t worry. There are plenty of treatments, procedures, and tactics you can employ to smooth your way back to glowing, even skin.

Here are five ways to wave goodbye to acne scars.

1. Micro-Needling

There are many treatments available to help fade different types of acne scars. But for many dermatologists and customers alike, micro-needling is the preferred procedure.

Micro-needling helps to reduce the appearance of acne scars and premature aging. The treatment involves puncturing micro-wounds into the skin to stimulate it to produce healthy and new collagen and elastin. It may sound painful, but trust us, it’s worth it.

Be warned, though. The skin's redness may linger for a few days after the procedure. Be sure not to plan your micro-needling treatment too close to any big parties or important dates.

2. Skin Peels

If your acne scars are subtle, a low-PH acid chemical peel is an excellent choice to help smooth them out.

Consider an at-home peel if you want to save spending the big bucks at the beauty salon or your local dermatologist. One of our favorites is the  DCL G10 Radiance Peel, which refines and renews with 10% glycolic acid.

These convenient solutions have come a long way in recent years, and now there’s a plethora of products on the market that help renew the skin’s surface and reduce the look of acne scarring. Seek solutions that offer gentle chemical exfoliation, and wave goodbye to stubborn acne scars. These formulas exfoliate dead and darkened scar skin cells and boost your body’s natural production of collagen.

If you opt for a professional peel, the results can be more effective, but so are the after-effects. You may experience redness and peeling of the face for three to seven days after the procedure. Again, it’s worth it, though.

3. Fillers

When we hear about fillers, we often think about people undergoing lip or cheek fillers. But did you know that you can have fillers to improve the appearance of acne scars?

Injecting collagen, hyaluronic acid, or fat into the skin can ‘fill out’ certain acne scars or stretch the skin. As a result, acne scars are less noticeable.

The finished look is usually impressive, and the procedure smooths out acne scars well. But, there’s a catch.

The results are temporary. To maintain the look, you’d need to repeat filler injections periodically, depending on the substances used.

4. Laser Resurfacing

For some of the best results, laser resurfacing can remove the skin's outer layer to smooth areas of acne scarring and lighten redness around healed spots.

However, the procedure is an invasive one, so this treatment isn’t for everyone. Laser resurfacing can be painful, but your doctor will reduce any pain by numbing the skin with local anesthesia. The treatment can take anywhere from a few minutes up to an hour.

While the results from laser resurfacing are impressive, it’s essential to consider the downtime It usually takes between three to ten days for the skin to heal completely. During that period, your skin will be red, scaly, and itchy, so booking time off working and staying indoors is recommended. After all, you don’t want to scare your colleagues.

5. At-Home Treatments

Of course, you don’t necessarily need to spend tons on expensive dermatological procedures to reduce the depth and appearance of acne scars. There are plenty of over-the-counter or non-prescription formulas that also do an excellent job of minimizing the look of scars.

While dark spots often fade with time, a medicated spot remover featuring hydroquinone can quicken the process. Likewise, treatments packed full of alpha-hydroxy acids encourage the growth of new skin. Such solutions lessen the appearance of lingering scars while simultaneously preventing the formation of new lesions.

When looking for at-home scar treatment, keep an eye out for products that feature alpha-hydroxy acids, such as glycolic and lactic acid. Our recommendation is the  Tuel Detox Healing Essential Oil Blend. The formula is made from antioxidant-rich plants and nothing else. The soothing blend of tea tree, cedarwood, and palmarosa send a concentrated hit of vitamins and nutrients into the skin, reducing the look of scars and inflamed spots.

Likewise, this dreamy oil blend also helps to prevent any new breakouts too.
