A Skin Care Guide to Beautiful Brows

Our eyebrows are such a key part of our appearance, and they make such a difference making sure that our facial features look balanced and harmonized. Coming from someone who took a lot of practice to figure out how to do my brow makeup, trust me, the wrong color, shape, or size can throw everything off kilter. But as important as eyebrows are, they really don’t get enough love when it comes to their health and care.

If you haven’t been giving your eyebrows space in your skin care routine (it’s okay, most of us don’t), now is the time you can change that. Check out these brow care tips for healthier, more beautiful eyebrows with or without makeup.

Don’t Underestimate Makeup Removal

When you forget or blow off removing your mascara or your foundation, it’s pretty noticeable – you can see the crusty or creased makeup and your skin and lashes feel uncomfortable. While day-old brow makeup isn’t as much of an immediate inconvenience, it’s still important to remove it daily. Over time, leaving makeup on and just piling on top of it daily can affect the health of your brows, not to mention dull their glossy sheen. Any makeup remover will do as long as it doesn’t cause breakouts or dry out your skin, or micellar water is always a great option.

Don’t Skip the Brows When You Exfoliate

Exfoliating the skin of your eyebrows is a great way to remove dead skin cells that might be blocking the surface of your skin. Plus, massaging an exfoliant into your skin also stimulates blood flow, which helps with healthy hair growth. So the next time you exfoliate your face, don’t skip those brows, bring your exfoliant right in there and give them a little massage.

Avoid Oil-Based Makeup Removers or Cleansers on Your Brows

Oil-based cleansers or makeup removers are great products and they have a time and place, and they can be fantastic for your facial skin depending on your skin type. But if you’re using them, try not to apply them on your brows, and work them around your brows instead. Otherwise, the oil can create a barrier that makes it harder for conditioning serums or other brow care products to reach your brows and work their magic. Which brings me to my next tip…

Use Specialized Brow Care Products

I’ll be honest, before I started my career writing for skin care and aesthetic medicine, I had no idea there were topical products for eyebrow care. But there are plenty of them and once you’ve started giving your brows genuine care, you won’t want to go back. Depending on what you want for your brows, there are brow conditioning serums, products that enhance healthy growth, and more. Any of these products are so quick and easy to apply but they can make a beautiful difference.

Opt for Trimming Over Plucking

At the risk of aging myself, I grew up in the era when pencil-thin brows were high fashion, so plucking our eyebrows into oblivion before we had our driver’s licenses was common practice. Now that more natural, fuller brows are back in, there’s not a day that goes by that I don’t regret it.

Any hair removal method that pulls the hair out by its root, like plucking or waxing, can damage the hair follicles over time so you get less hair growth. That might be great if you want less leg hair, but when it comes to your eyebrows, it’s not the desired effect. So when you see a few brow hairs that are too long or are out of place, groom those brows by using a trimmer or just cutting the long hairs instead. That way, you get the nice clean look you want but you preserve your brows’ shape and fullness over time in the process.

Choose Your Service Providers Wisely

If you want to make a more lasting cosmetic change to your brows, there are plenty of services out there from laminating to tinting to microblading. But if you’re going this route, make sure you do your homework and choose a provider that’s qualified and experienced in these procedures. Yes, they’re cosmetic, but they can have a negative effect on your brows’ health and appearance if they’re done poorly or without the right tools and products. So take these services seriously and choose someone you can trust.

Making Your Brows Part of Your Skin Care

Eyebrows are so often overlooked in our skin care routines, and that could be causing yours to be less full and healthy than they could be. A few simple changes with the tips and tools above can give you stronger and more adaptable brows that complement your look every day.
