How Long to Leave Between Each Step of Your Skincare Routine
Posted by Ellie Swain on Dec 5th 2025
Ever feel like your skincare routine is always a rushed race? You slap on your serum, moisturizer, and SPF as fast as possible, hoping that your skin soaks it all in like a sponge.
But timing matters more than you think. Leaving enough time between applications helps your products perform better and prevents them from piling, peeling, or cancelling each other out. The thing is, most of us are clueless about exactly how long to wait between layers.
That’s why we’re here: to break down the timing step by step. And don’t worry, we’ll be realistic too. We know nobody has time to sit around like a glazed donut for 30 minutes every morning and night.
1. Cleanser to Toner: No Waiting Needed
Let’s start easy, and at the beginning: cleansing. Whether you’re double cleansing at night or using a gentle face wash in the morning, once you’ve rinsed, there’s usually no need to wait between your next step.
All you need to do is gently pat your skin dry, then go straight in with your toner while your skin is slightly damp. This is actually the sweet spot for applying hydrating toners, because wet skin absorbs ingredients more easily. Avoid letting your face air-dry completely, or the water can evaporate, taking the moisture with it.
⏱ Wait time: 0–10 seconds. Just towel off and go.
2. Toner to Serum: 30 – 60 Seconds
Once your toner is on, give it a moment to sink in. If it’s a watery, hydrating toner, 30 seconds is usually plenty of time. If you’re using an exfoliating toner with ingredients like glycolic or salicylic acid, wait closer to 60 seconds to avoid overloading your skin with actives––we love the M.A.D Skincare Anti-Aging Glycolic Toner, by the way.
Let each layer settle just long enough so that you’re not diluting your serum or making a sticky mess. If you’re a true multitasker, use this brief time to sip your coffee or reply to that voice note from your bestie.
⏱ Wait time: 30 – 60 seconds. Enough to check your phone, not scroll your whole feed.

3. Serum to Moisturizer: 1 – 2 Minutes
Here’s where you need to start practicing your patience. Serums are usually full of actives, like niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, or vitamin C. It’s essential for them to fully absorb before sealing them into your skin with your moisturizer.
A good rule of thumb is: if your skin feels a little tacky to the touch, give it more time. Once your complexion feels slightly plumped and less sticky, you’re good to go.
Use this pause to tie up and style your hair, pack your handbag, or even tidy your bathroom counter.
⏱ Wait time: 1 – 2 minutes. Just enough time for a little life admin.
4. Moisturizer to SPF: 2 – 5 Minutes
Here’s where many people tend to rush, and it can backfire. If your moisturizer hasn’t completely absorbed before you apply your SPF, it can cause the sunscreen to pile or not spread easily. And that means patchy protection and skin that isn’t so smooth.
Give your moisturizer a few solid minutes to sink in, especially if it’s a rich formula. This is the time to get dressed, munch on a quick breakfast bar, or brew a cup of coffee.
We know timing doesn’t always work out, though, especially in the morning. If you’re in a rush, try patting in your moisturizer instead of rubbing it in, as this helps it absorb more quickly.
⏱ Wait time: 2 – 5 minutes. Ideal time for outfit indecision.
5. SPF to Makeup: 5 – 10 Minutes
If you wear makeup, here’s the final test. But trust us, it’s worth it. Applying foundation or concealer too soon after your SPF means it can slide around, appear cakey, or look streaky.
Let your sunscreen settle and create a proper film on your skin so it can do its job of protecting you from UV rays and also play nicely with your makeup. You may also choose to add a primer in between these steps, too, for an even smoother makeup application––like the Jane Iredale Smooth Affair® Mattifying Face Primer.
During this window, style your hair or have a quick scroll on Instagram (we won’t judge). Once your skin feels smooth and dry to the touch, you're ready to glam.
⏱ Wait time: 5–10 minutes. Basically, the length of your favorite get-ready playlist opener.

6. The Exception to the Wait: Nighttime Minimalism
At night, you can usually relax more about timing. If you’re just using a serum and moisturizer, you can cut down on wait times. Your skin works hard to regenerate overnight, so this time is more forgiving.
But if you’re adding actives like retinol or exfoliants, still give them a couple of minutes to absorb before locking them in for the night.
While these timings are helpful to follow, don’t stress too much if you’ve not nailed the timing between every step. The best way to tell if your skin is ready for the next step is to check how it feels.
If it’s still wet or sticky, you probably still need some more time. If it feels soft and almost dry, it’s time to move on.
Now it’s time to layer like a pro and give your skin the breathing room it deserves between each skincare step. Good luck!
